Advocacy

The League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson (LWVGT) is a nonpartisan organization that advocates for public policy and social issues at the local level while also collaborating with the League of Women Voters of Arizona (LWVAZ) and the national League of Women Voters (LWVUS) on broader statewide and national issues. The LWVGT Advocacy Committee leads our advocacy efforts. Members can get involved by joining the Advocacy Committee and subcommittees, and by taking action in support of the State and National Leagues.

LWVGT Advocacy activities include:
Gun Violence Prevention; Observer Corps; the annual Legislative Breakfast and annual Lobby Day; and reviewing and updating League Positions annually.

Gun Violence Prevention

The
Gun Violence Prevention Subcommittee has been very active in meeting with local leaders about ways to better protect our community from gun violence.

Subcommittee members were also instrumental in planning the 2025 LWVGT Issues & Eggs fundraising event on the topic of "Safe Lives, Safe Homes."

Observer Corps

T
he Observer Corps is a long-standing tradition in the League of Women Voters of Greater Tucson (LWVGT) and in Leagues across the country. Observer Corps volunteers observe the meetings of local public governing bodies and then submit a brief report which is shared on the LWVGT website. The objective is to ensure transparency in government and keep League members, and the public, informed about the issues and actions of local government that impact our lives.

As a volunteer with the Observer Corps, you will:

  • attend a training to become familiar with Arizona’s Open Meetings Laws and review the positions of LWV of Greater Tucson;
  • attend monthly meetings of a local government body, either in person or online;
  • take notes, complete a summary report of the proceedings, and submit your report to the committee chair; and
  • attend meetings of the Observer Corps committee.
Observer Corps volunteers do not speak at public meetings unless requesting clarification, and they are not spokespersons for the League. The time commitment is about 4-6 hours per month.
